The Play’s The Thing on The Third
28th June- 2nd September ‘06
In a unique initiative, Channel 4 launched “The Play’s The Thing” a search for a first-time playwright. It attracted submissions from more than 2,000 un-produced writers. Three top theatre professionals whittled down the submissions to a shortlist of three and ultimately selected On The Third Day by Kate Betts to be produced as a fully staged West End production at the New Ambassadors Theatre, with a first-class director, creative team and cast. A four part Channel 4 TV series has accompanied the project from the initial selection of the short listed amateur writers, through to the production and opening night of the play.
On the Third Day is a story about undiscovered truths locked into the childhood of a brother and sister who are orphaned. Maxine Peake gives a stunning performance as the lost yet wishful Claire, an astrologist with her head in the stars unwilling to face her reaction and relationship with her brother since the death of her parents. Until however, she meets a stranger in her bar who later declares he is Jesus.
Whilst the script may touch on clichés at times, with plenty of biblical references scattered throughout the play which, considering the subject matter is often best avoided. It is the grounded and earnest performances from the actors which carries you through this production. Maxine Peake offers a twitchy and vulnerable performance with an effortless charm which rests well against the laid back and casual performance of Mike (or Jesus as he is more formally known) played by Paul Hilton. Robert Delamere’s direction helps to captures and upbeat slant and reality to a somewhat dark production which ultimately adds a theatrical edge to a script that can often feel like it is written for television. Capturing this theme however, Mark Thompson’s highly visual set helps to blend the scenes seamlessly with some strong theatrical imagery that stays with you long after the production.
Whilst there has been a lot of controversy surrounding finding new talent through reality TV programme I do believe that Kate Betts production is definitely worth a visit. For a first time playwright her ideas are bold and she tackles heavy subject matter with a wry sense of humour. “He’s a bit strict!” replies Jesus when asked what his father is is like! The West End is crying out for fresh talent and Kate Betts has certainly more to come. I understand that she is now working on a radio play…The Living Room awaits.
