Stressed students can chill out with the Samaritans

A charitable group in West Norfolk, England, has recently found a new way to help students deal with the stresses of exams, essays, and university life. The Lynn Samaritans, a branch of a larger support hotline known simply as Samaritans, recently set up an innovative connection which offered university students the chance to talk and unload their stresses and concerns with a professional via the internet.

“If you feel alone and are struggling to manage your stress during the exam period, talking about your feelings can help,” said program Director Tony Taylor to Lynn News. According to Taylor, troubled students using the web-chat can e-mail their concerns over academic or personal problems, and be addressed confidentially by a trained Samaritan professional. Using email to communicate takes the stress off of students who might be too reluctant to call a hotline, especially if they are stressed about test season. “Exams can bring with them a whirlwind of emotions,” said Taylor.

The site also includes a list of helpful tips to aid students in coping with university stress, including advice about managing time well and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise habits. Additionally, parents and teachers are encouraged to contact the hotline, which deals in all areas of student life. “[We] help you to gain perspective and clarity before your emotions spiral out of control,” said Taylor,  “…get in touch at any time.”
