Before we get down to it let’s clear up what you need in order to enrol on this course.  Most colleges will want students with at least 4 GCSEs, grade C and above, in Double Science, Maths and English, or the equivalent.  On top of this you might be expected to attend an interview so be prepared!

What the course involves...

If you’ve thought about a career in areas like forensic science, scientific research, laboratory work, biotechnology, industrial chemistry or food science then this course could be the key.  As this list tells you, it is a varied and interesting course with lots of opportunities at the end of it.  The Applied Science National Diploma will help you to explore and develop a wide range of skills in subjects such as biochemistry, electronics, industrial chemistry, microbiology and analytical chemistry.  Everything you learn will be related to the science employment industry, making it really useful in your career.  You will also be able to work on transferable skills in ICT and management, giving your CV some extra flavour.  A work placement is also part of the course, giving you the chance to experience working in the science industry and get a good idea about what sort of areas you want to go into.  If you hate exams then there’s good news, there aren’t any on this course!  You will be assessed through coursework assignments and lab records.

What next...

After the Applied Science National Diploma you can go straight into work and lots of employers actually allow you to get a further qualification whilst working, like a foundation degree, meaning you can earn while you learn.  The National Diploma can also see you into university to study a science-based degree, a popular choice among Diploma students.
