Postgraduate Courses and Research in International Development
The Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) within the School of Environment and Development (SED) at the University of Manchester is one of the UK’s leading centres for research on international development issues. Our objective is to promote poverty-reducing social and economic development particularly within lower-income countries, by enhancing the capabilities of individuals and organisations through education, training, research, consultancy and policy analysis.
The combined field experience of members of the Institute covers over sixty countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and the Pacific. Much of this experience has been gained in work for national and international agencies.

IDPM provides:
- A wide range of postgraduate degree programmes at Masters and Diploma level in development-related disciplines and specialisations
- Research of international excellence into major issues of development policy and practice, including two DFID-funded Development Research centres
- An internationally renowned postgraduate research programme (PhD/MPhil) in development policy and management
- Consultancy, research and training work for international agencies, national governments and institutions, and the private sector, both in-country and in Manchester
- Distance learning study programmes
Our areas of specialisation and expertise include: IDPM has been awarded international excellence both for its teaching (QAA) and for its research (RAE). Since its foundation, the Institute has trained over 7000 individuals from 170 countries.
