Newman University College is best known for its undergraduate and postgraduate initial teacher training courses, however it also has a wide range of single and combined honours degrees in diverse areas including sport, management, theology, history and media. Degree courses at Newman are designed to be academically challenging and develop transferable skills required by modern graduates. All degree courses have work-placement modules embedded, enabling students to apply the skills and knowledge they have gained. This could be why it consistently has one of the best graduate employment rates of UK universities. In recent years very positive inspection reports have been received from the QAA and OFSTED, including an 'outstanding' grade, the highest possible, for its latest secondary inspection. Reports frequently highlight the positive experience of students and individual attention offered by Newman’s staff. It is also the UK's top ranked University for student satisfaction in The Guardian's University Guide 2009. The relatively small class sizes at Newman enable an interactive teaching style, discussion and debate not possible in large lecture theatres. Situated on the outskirts of South West Birmingham Newman's campus is based in Bartley Green, some 8 miles from the city centre and overlooks Bartley reservoir and the Worcestershire countryside beyond. Its location makes it convenient for access to both the M5 and M42 motorways. As a small University College, Newman is committed to providing excellent student support and welcoming new students into its friendly community. Class sizes are small and lecturers are able to give students greater individual support. Newman University College is named after John Henry Newman (1801-90), one of the intellectual giants of the 19th century. His life was marked by a constant struggle for integrity and truth at considerable cost to himself. Newman has vacancies on a number of undergraduate courses starting this September including: Postgraduate teacher education Keys Stage 2/3 (qualifies graduates to teach at both primary and secondary level) Mathematics Science Modern Foreign languages Graduate and registered Teacher Programme (work-based) |
